Clocking-in at TEDDY BEAR STITCHERY
A specially constructed scaffold, which functions simultaneously as an enlarged embroidery frame and sculptural platform, supports a canvas made of latex fabric on which the performers sew threads into the surface together over the entire duration of the exhibition – creating the image of a teddy bear. This motif and pattern, which the many cross-stitches together suggest and depict in fragments, reveals the individual steps in the cross-stitching process: a half-blurred, half-sharp pencil drawing of a cross grid, dissolving threads and skin-like latex stretched over the cold metal rods. Each duo of performers works on specific sections of the predrawn grid. The magnification of needle, stitch and the materials used require collaboration and emphasise the importance of close mutual coordination of movements and rhythms of both the partners and the material.
